Checklist to Build a House
Building a house can seem daunting, especially if you have never taken on a similar project before. It gets a lot more manageable to build your house when each step is broken into smaller bite-size pieces. A checklist to build a house would be really handy.
This idea is similar for marathon runners. They know not to get discouraged with “I have to run 26 miles?!” and simply get a run plan, which will tell them Day 1: run one mile. Day 2: run one mile, and so on until they build up to being able to complete the race.
You may be thinking, “Where do I start? What activities go first? When do I order the oven?” What is nice about the Home Construction Spreadsheet is that a customized step-by-step checklist to build a house is generated for building your home.
The spreadsheet takes the cost inputs and the schedule inputs and uses that data to customize the step-by-step checklist created to build your own home. The checklist becomes your dashboard of what tasks need to be completed that week. It reminds you of which suppliers and subcontractors you need to be interacting.
Some of the key items on a checklist to build a house include:
- Pre-construction items
- Foundation
- Framing
- Mechanical, Electric and Plumbing (MEP)
- Insulation & Drywall
- Floor Coverings
A home building checklist is the culmination of planning the project. There are two main tasks to complete a complex project: (1) Plan the Work, and then (2) Work the Plan.
When you go on a journey that has many turns that you are not familiar with, it is really nice to have your phone tell you, “In 1000 ft, turn right.” In week eleven, for example, of building your house, you will want a checklist that says “Call this supplier”.
Knowing which order and when to do all of the tasks involved in building a house can seem overwhelming, especially if you have been doing it for a few months and you’ve been going to your kids’ basketball games, and working your full-time job and trying to remember your wedding anniversary – you have other things going on. It’s nice to look at the dashboard and see “Okay, this week I have to do these 6 tasks.”
As you work through the cost and schedule inputs, it will improve the “Plan the Work” portion, that is, the Step-by-Step Checklist. This is creating steps to building a house checklist.
